Last Bird Standing

 Bill Howard

Welcome to my bird photography site. I grew up in a semi-rural part of Perth, Western Australia, where my fascination with birds and the natural world began early in life. After school and on weekends, I’d head out with friends to explore the bush and wetlands near home, always listening and watching for birds. Sadly, most of those wild spaces are now gone — replaced by suburbs and industrial development — but my passion for nature has never faded.

I now live in the Peel region of southern Western Australia. It’s a beautiful part of the country, rich in birdlife, but unfortunately facing the same pressures I witnessed growing up: habitat loss, land clearing, and urbanisation. These threats are taking a real toll on the birds and ecosystems I care so deeply about.

Photography, for me, is both a creative outlet and a form of advocacy. I believe the images we create reflect what matters to us. Through my bird photography, I aim to tell stories of beauty, intelligence, and resilience — to capture the unique character of each species and share what makes them so remarkable. Photography allows me to spend time in nature, observe wildlife closely, and contribute in my own way to its protection.

As natural habitats continue to disappear, I hope my images help raise awareness, spark curiosity, and encourage greater appreciation for Australia’s birdlife and the ecosystems that support it.

This site is a work in progress, and I’ll be adding more photographs over time. All images are available free of charge for conservation and educational use — please feel free to get in touch if they can support your work
